Virtual Pharmacy APPEs ft. Jennifer Prisco | APPE Coordinator View

“We lost 80-90% of those APPE placements.”

Jennifer Prisco is a pharmacist and APPE Pharmacy Practice Coordinator.  She is responsible for placing clinical students locally, statewide, and nationwide in pharmacy experiential rotations.  In addition, she is developing an international pharmacy placement program.  Every year, she coordinates roughly 4500 clinical placements across 3 university campuses.

Here, Dr. Prisco describes the large magnitude of displaced inpatient APPE rotations for her respective university.  In Brian Fung’s interview with Dr. Prisco, they discuss pharmacy APPE rotations during this complicated time, the impact it has on students, recent ACPE policy changes, etc.  Virtual pharmacy APPEs may play a part in assisting pharmacy students impacted during this time and for the upcoming rotation year.

Background:  Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, many pharmacy APPEs were canceled in March 2020.  This left many students in a situation in which they may not graduate due either lack of hours, licensure requirement, or etc. Given the ubiquitous adoption of stay at home orders, utilization of virtual platforms for Virtual pharmacy APPEs have become more commonplace.
